The past weeks have reminded us that education, like life, does not always follow a predictable calendar. The lecturers’ strike in the public universities disrupted our rhythm, stretched our timelines, and brought an unexpected pause to our academic journey. This caused us to resume classes on a very tight and demanding schedule. It is natural to feel the pressure of catching up but this season also offers us an opportunity to grow in ways that go far beyond academics.
In every career pathway, the ability to adapt to shifting times and seasons is one of the most valuable skills one can develop. Workplaces evolve, plans get interrupted, and deadlines tighten. Those who thrive are not the ones with the smoothest path, but the ones who remain flexible, resilient, and diligent despite the challenges.
This compressed program may feel intense, but it also invites us to practice the qualities that define future-ready graduates:
- Flexibility in reorganizing routines and learning strategies
- Resilience in bouncing back after disruptions
- Diligence in keeping our eyes firmly on our academic goals
- Teamwork in supporting classmates and ensuring no one is left behind
- A positive mindset, choosing to see opportunities rather than limitations
Instead of viewing this as a “half-empty glass” season, let us treat it as a refining moment, a time to prove to ourselves that we can rise to the occasion. This is how we embody the spirit of Machakos University’s commitment to Co-creating Sustainable Futures: by approaching challenges with creativity, strength, and a shared determination to move forward.
As your mentor and career guide, I encourage each of you to embrace this season with confidence. Lean on one another, manage your time wisely, keep open communication with your lecturers, and remember that how you respond to challenging seasons becomes part of your personal and professional story.
Let this be the chapter where you learn not just to endure, but to adapt, excel, and grow together.
